This incredible piece of folk art was made for August Both by his loved one in the third quarter of the 19th C.  She memorialized him by placing his photo in the center of the piece.  This remarkable paper cutting has amazing detail with peacocks, cranes, squirrels, eagles, angels, stars, fans, hearts, tulips, thistles, scissors, a reindeer, an Indian in a canoe, an alligator, and the words “God Bless My Home, August Both”.  Truly amazing!  In pristine condition on a gold velvet background and framed in a period faux tiger maple frame.  (genealogy records on Mr. Both included, nothing is known about his wife).

August Both was born in 1855and lived in Plau, Mecklenburg, Germany.  He became a cabinet maker and immigrated to New York in 1879 aboard the ship Frisia, from Hamburg to New York.  He was 24 years of age when he arrived in America where he continued his cabinet making/carpentry.  Little more is known, except that he was married and widowed by age 45, when the 1900 New York census was taken.
