Outstanding 19th C. reverse painting on glass of a sleek American gaff rigged schooner running close hauled on a starboard tack, all sails aloft and drawing, probably off the China coast, as this reverse-on-glass ship portrait was unquestionably executed by an unusually skillful Chinese port painter. With only two tiny scratches, this portrait is in unbelievably good condition. Probably ca. 1850-1880 during the period when America was competing with England for the newly opened Chinese trade markets. 12" x 16" overall, in a burlwood frame with gilt liner.
