Fine small American whale oil lantern, ca. 1830-1840, with blown octagonal glass font,original burner, with star and diamond punch work. Very fine condition, all original, no repairs or replacements. This lantern form was a mainstay in lighting early American homes and appears in many historic restorations such as the White-Ellery House, one of the oldest dwellings in Gloucester Massachusetts, pictured by Samuel Chamberlain on p. 43 of New England Rooms 1639-1869. This same form appears in plates 49 and 55 of Colonial Lighting by Arthur Hayward. 9"H (13" to top of ring) with a base width of only 3-1/4". (areas of pitting due to age).
