Early Canadian Goose Decoy
This fine early decoy of a goose was carved out of pine, with the beak, head, and neck each carved separately and assembled. It was then painted, with applied metal brads for eyes. A small amount of its original painted surface still remains. Measuring 25 " long by 7" wide by 11" tall (to top of head). Virginia origin. Late 19th C. to early 20th C. If the paint were restored I believe this would be worth a great deal more.
Attributed to Charles Birch
Charles Birch (1867–1956) was born in Maryland, raised on Chincoteague, and later moved to Willis Wharf in Northampton County, VA, at age 39. He was a renowned Virginia decoy carver, boat builder, and waterman based in Willis Wharf. Known for creating hollow-carved decoys with a distinct, elegant style—his work is considered top-tier American folk art. His decoys often featured hollow carving, tack eyes, and inserted hardwood bills.
